Annual Infection Prevention & Control Study Day 2015, Cheshire & Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
23 November 2015
Jennifer Adams Infection Prevention and Control Nurse invited Derek Butler to speak at the Cheshire & Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust IPC Study Day after hearing Derek present earlier this year.
Derek presented "Hearts and Minds" speaking about the effects avoidable healthcare associated infections have on patients and their families and how things can be so different if we follow some simple basic rules on infection prevention and control. The presentation told the stories of many who had been lost and how if the staff caring for them had done things differently the outcomes could have been so different for the patient and their families.
Derek told the story of Joe his dad who was admitted to their local hospital at 89 in a critical condition with severe sepsis and very little chance of surviving. Derek told how the staff cared for Joe and how by doing the right thing at the right time Joe made a good recovery and when discharged his family and especially Derek’s mum, Marion, continued the care for Joe. He is now at home looking forward to another Christmas and his 94th birthday in January.
Many of the staff approached Derek after the presentation during a coffee break to say how he had inspired them knowing that they can make a huge difference to the standard of care their patients receive.
